Game Recap
Men’s Volleyball (league)
November 19, 1999
T.W.U. Spartans (2) at University of Winnipeg (3)
Close to the top, but still looking up
Langley, British Columbia – They can play the spoiler, but not the winner. The Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team was successful in taking a point from the University of Winnipeg on November 19, but were unable to capture a win. The Spartans fell to the Wesmen 2-3 on the road. Game scores for Winnipeg were 27-25, 25-20, 25-18, 19-25, and 21-25.
TWU (1-6) dropped the first three games and not only won the final two, but earned themselves a point in the standings and stole one from the top ranked team in the nation (CIAU): Winnipeg (4-0). Head Coach Ron Pike stated, “We had a bit of a tough go at the beginning and we weren’t able to seize that first game. We were having a hard time getting into a rhythm.”
Winnipeg’s #1 ranking didn’t faze the Spartans, as they played right with the Wesmen the whole way through. “We made some line-up changes and that helped us, but we were looking for more than we got. We showed we can play with them, but we want to play them tougher,” remarked Pike.
“Dan and Luke Bainard played decent for us tonight and Joel Jansen came in and set well in the final game and will earn the start tomorrow,” continued Pike.
The Spartans will have a re-match with Winnipeg on November 20 at 5 p.m. (Central Time).
