Men’s Volleyball (league)
October 30, 1999
T.W.U. Spartans (1) vs. University of Alberta (4)
Bears 4-1 over scrappy Spartans
Langley, British Columbia – The University of Alberta was surprised once and it wasn’t going to happen again. After the Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team lost 2-3 to Alberta on October 29, they faced them again on October 30 and lost 1-4. Game scores for Alberta were 29-27, 25-15, 25-21, 25-23 and 23-25.
TWU was on their way to another upset bid, but squandered 2 match points in the first game and dropped four games in a row to surging Alberta. Knowing they needed to gain a point, the Spartans kept their heads in the game and Joe Brandsma came up with a huge block at the end, to take the fifth game and the much needed point.
“Losing that first game was a real back-breaker. We knew we needed to take it to put pressure on Alberta and they needed it to take charge of the game, it was a crucial game and we ended up on the bad side,” remarked Head Coach Ron Pike.
Pike continued, “We are still in that training to compete mode and we only really played in 3 of the 5 games tonight. The telling stat is how badly they out-dug us. We just weren’t getting the digs we needed tonight.”
Luke Bainard (TWU) led all players with 19 kills and Scott Emslie (UA) had 18. Jamie Benkie (UA) led the game with 9 digs.
“Luke led us again, as he has all weekend. Somebody else must step up and play with Luke at a higher level,” noted Pike.
TWU falls to 0-2 in Canada West action but will face UBC on November 5. TWU lost an exhibition match to UBC, 2-3, on October 23, but hope to improve their league record at War Memorial Gymnasium at 8 pm.
