UBC squeaks by TWU in pre-season tuner

Langley, British Columbia –
They were close, but just not quite there. The Trinity Western University men’s volleyball team fell just short against UBC in a pre-season match on October 1. The game, played at War Memorial at UBC, was tight all the way through, but the final shows the Thunderbirds on top 4-1. Game scores for UBC were 29-27, 25-18, 17-25, 26-24 and 26-24.

TWU came out sluggish, but fought back to stay in the first game. Both teams traded points until the T’Birds were able to put away the Spartans 29-27. UBC rode the first game straight into the next. They jumped all over TWU and the Spartans could never quite catch up, as they fell behind 2 games to 0. However, it was not done. The Spartans shot out to a big lead in the third game and clipped the T’Birds’ wings. The fourth game was crucial and TWU was ready. They rushed to a seven-point lead before UBC fought back. TWU had a game point at 24-23, but UBC pushed three straight points to take the match to 3-1. In the fifth game, again the Spartans had an opportunity to seal the game up 24-23, but as in the previous game, the T’Birds won three straight and took the match 4-1.

“We are showing we can play with CIAU teams, but we are still lacking that one little thing we need to put us over the top. We are doing everything as well as other teams, but it is the ability to make plays at key times that sets other teams apart and we have to learn how to step up and make those plays,” stated Head Coach Ron Pike.

“(Joe) Melissen passed really well tonight and Luke (Bainard), before he got injured, was unstoppable on the outside and those guys are helping keep us in games. We need to make better decisions in crunch time in order to pull out some victories,” continued Pike.

Bainard led the Spartans with 15 kills, even though he left the match in the third game with a hip injury. Melissen led TWU with 11 digs. The Spartans will play host to a TWU Alumni squad on October 2. Game time will be 2 p.m.
