SPARTANS HEADED BACK TO NATIONALS
-CW goal scoring leader hits for three more in win

LANGLEY, British Columbia - Trinity Western University forward Nathan Pogue (Seaside, Ore.) notched a hat-trick as the Canada West league champions defeated the No. 4 University of Alberta 3-0 Friday night at Trinity Western University. With the win the Spartans head back to the CIS national championship for the third year in a row.

The Spartans dominated the match outshooting the Golden Bears 18-3, 13-0 in the first half. Pogue scored in the eighth, 45th and 59th minutes. Today's match was a rematch of last years CIS championship, which Alberta won 1-0.

TWU's speed caused problems for Alberta all over the park. The Golden Bears spent nearly the entire first half in their own end of the filed.

Pogue got the Spartans off to their traditional fast start with a goal in the 8th minute. Pogue took a corner kick from teammate Adrian Kekec (Burnaby, B.C.) and headed it neatly past Alberta keeper Jaswinder Gill (Edmonton) and into the top right side of the Golden Bears net.

Just as the half was winding down the Spartan pressure caused Gill to miss kick a loose ball. The errant ball went directly to Pogue who was standing at the top of the Golden Bears penalty area. Pogue took the ball off the bounce and volleyed it over Gill and into the top of the net to make it 2-0 TWU at the half.

Pogue got the final goal of the match in the 69th minute. TWU forward Mustafa Demirci (Ankara, Turkey) took the ball up the left hand side of the park and attacked the Alberta's right back. Demirci turned the corner and sent a beautiful cross to the top of the Golden Bears crease. Pogue came charging in from the far side and headed the ball nicely into the top left corner of the Alberta net.

With the three goals the Canada West goal scoring leader moves to 13 goals on the season.

TWU will match-up against the UBC Thunderbirds Saturday evening in the Canada West Championship match. The match will be a rematch of the 2005 CW Championship, which the Spartans won 2-1. As in that match, this years CW Championship match has both teams already qualifying for the CIS National Championship. The CIS Championship runs Nov. 8-11 at UBC.

Match Notes: Andrew Fink (Burnaby, B.C.) made one save in the win, while Gill made seven in the loss...TWU had a 6-3 edge in corners... Pogue's 13 goals are second on TWU's record book for single season goals. Pogue trails only Kekec, who scored 17 goals in 2006...
