TWU Spartans (89) vs. Athletes in Action (94) - Overtime
AIA and TWU Dance into OT
Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University Spartans and Athletes in Action closed out the TWU Red Robin Classic in style Thursday night at TWU. For the fans that were looking for more action, the two teams decided to go into overtime before Athletes in Action prevailed 94-89 over the Spartans.
With a 77-70 lead with two minutes remaining in the game it looked like the Spartans had sealed the victory. Then AIA's David Daniels hit two three-point shots in the final 1:53 to give AIA an 8-1 run and send the game into the extra frame tied at 78.
The two teams matched each other and remained tied at 86 after three minutes of overtime. Then AIA went on an 8-0 run, which included two three-point baskets by Dante Quanine, to blow the game open. Quanine finished the night with a team high 22 points.
Logan Kitteringham did everything he could on offense to get the Spartans the win as he dominated the game with a career high 33 points on 11-16 shooting. His previous high was 27 points, set last year in game two of the Pacific Division semi-final against UBC.
TWU had a 45-44 lead at the half as the two teams matched each other over the entire game. The two combined for 17 lead changes and nine tying baskets.
Next up for the Spartans is Canada West conference play against the Simon Fraser University Clan. TWU hosts SFU on Thursday, January 6th and Saturday, January 8th. Both games will tip off at 8:00 pm.
Thursday's game will be broadcast live on MOJO radio, while Saturday's game will be broadcast live on TWU's Spartan Web Radio on www.twu.ca/athletics.
Game Notes: AIA outrebounded the Spartans 42-31...The two teams combined for 52 3-point attempts, TWU went 7-24, while AIA went 9-28...AIA went 25-36 from the free throw line, while TWU went 20-28...TWU's Brian Banman sat out tonight's game after hitting for a combined 28 points in the first two games of the tournament...
