VICTORIA – The University of Victoria men’s hockey team used two power play goals to spark a five goal first period outburst and push themselves to a 10-5 victory over the Trinity Western University Spartans in BCIHL hockey Saturday night at the Ian Stewart Complex in Victoria.
The loss puts an end to the Spartans three game winning streak and drops TWU to 9-11-1, while the win snaps Victoria’s three game skid and lifts them to 12-7-1 in the BCIL.
Matthew Bell led the way for Victoria with four goals. Both teams scored three times on the power play with TWU going three for seven and Victoria going three for eight.
“It was a tough one tonight,” commented TWU head coach Dwayne Lowdermilk. “We had some bad breaks and gave up five early goals, but we fought back and chipped away.”
Victoria opened the game with five straight goals, before TWU’s Sam Ahlgren responded on a power play goal from Robert Vos and Brandon Long at 4:23 of the first period. Victoria’s goals came from Justin Ferreira at 18:35, Tommy Adair at 11:59, two power play goals from Matthew Bell at 10:36 and 5:27 and a goal by Noel Pariseau at 7:13.
The home team scored two more in the second period to make it 7-1 at the end of 40 minutes. Victoria’s Brent Sutherland scored at 13:02 and Bell with his third of the night at 2:33 gave the home team the six goal lead.
The Spartans outscored Victoria 4-3 in the third period, but the gap was too great to overcome as TWU fell 10-5. TWU’s goals came from Brandon Long with a power play goal at 16:32, with the assists to Kevin Taylor and Josh Stephenson, Brendan Stephan at 12:37 with assists to Samuel Gemmell, a power play goal from Brendan Elenko at 10:42 with assists to Samuel Gemmell and Robert Vos finished the Spartans scoring at 6:12 with assists from Josh Stephenson and Jonathan Woof. Victoria’s Bell got his fourth of the night at 15:54 with Adam Courtnall at 7:02 and Dennis Pavlina at 1:58 rounding out Victoria’s scoring.
TWU’s JP Chapman started the contest and played just over 10 minutes, giving up three goals on 10 shots. Tim Zwiers replaced Chapman for the remainder of the game and made 30 saves, while giving up seven goals. Victoria’s Tim Manuel made 41 saves to earn the victoria for the home team.
The Spartans will finish of the regular season next weekend with a road trip to play the Selkirk Saints on Feb. 25 and Feb. 26. The BCIHL play-offs will run March 23-27 at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby, B.C. The Spartans first game will be on Wed. March 23 at 4 p.m.
